BIOGRAPHY
Alphonse Daudet, novelist and short-story writer, was born in Nimes, France. He was reared in Lyon and had an inconsistent education. He moved to Paris when he was 17 and worked for newspapers as a writer. He then worked as a private secretary for Duke de Morny. He enlisted in the army during the Franco-Prussian war.
Daudet's first book of poetry, LES AMOUREUSES (WOMEN IN LOVE), was published when he was 18. He had written his first novel at 14. He achieved literary success with the 1874 publication of FROMONT JEUNE ET RISLER AINE (FROMONT THE YOUNGER AND RILER THE ELDER) for which he won an award from the French Academy.
Alphonse Daudet died in 1897.
